School is in session, fall is in the air and Halloween is around the corner. To help you get a jump on spooky season, I’ve rounded up five of my favorite whimsical costumes and natural accessories from quality makers and small shops. Each year, Halloween generates over 12 million pounds of textile waste with more than 85{4f792f363afed9c900b534cfe6697e8ab2a0aadebc794c4863eaec3a4d1e325b} of costumes ending up in a landfill. Since dress up is an important experience for children all year long, I like to approach the holiday by thinking about costumes and accessories that will be enjoyed on October 31st and far beyond!
1. Jack Be Nimble
My new costume obsession is Jack Be Nimble, a design studio located in Asheville, North Carolina where dress up magic happens. Jack Be Nimble costumes are inspired by nature and constructed for active play and adventuring. I love the whimsical quality of their designs and I am particularly smitten by the Oak Leaf Wings, Sprout Hat and Butterfly Fairy Wings sets.
2. Sarah’s Silks
Sarah’s Silks has been a go-to costume destination of mine for years. Their designs are open-ended, which means children can reimagine what their costumes are time and time again. Since each costume can be used in multiple ways, they last for years. Best part? Silk is a biodegradable fabric and the production is environmentally beneficial.
3. Wild Things Dresses
I love this colorful superhero cape from Wild Things Dresses. Instead of representing a specific character, this cape will inspire your child to embody the hero of his or her dreams! Wild Things Dresses are created by author Kirsty Harylet and are handmade in the UK. Order this cape in advance if you want to add personalization for your little.
4. Earth Paint
This natural face paint, available at Bella Luna, is a must have! Made with natural and certified organic ingredients, this face paint offers a bold and bright look without chemicals. Safety-tested, these Natural Face Paints are free of heavy metals, nanoparticles, formaldehyde, phthalates, parabens, and animal products.
5. Band of the Wild
Pajama costumes. Need I say more? Band of the Wild makes the comfiest costumes that double as PJ sets. Each costume is made of soft eco-friendly cotton that’s easy to wash. From playtime to dreamtime, these sets bring whimsy and fun to all hours of the day!
